Founding of Norplas
Why did you choose Plastic Recycling? Tony: In 1955 I finished my degree and started work with Pure Chemicals as a research chemist in the field of plastic stabilisers. Then in 1960 I joined BX Plastics in Manningtree. Whilst there I met Jimmy Jack and together we developed a new process to make polypropylene film. In doing this I learnt the value of recycling , since the polypropylene was expensive, every bit of waste had to be put back in the process. In 1980 I left BX Plastics and became a consultant for machinery for manufacture and recycling of plastics. Then at the "K Show" in 1984, I saw the Erema for the first time. The Erema was the first machine I had seen that could recycle polypropylene without degrading it too much, and was more cost effective due to it's unique technology. In 1985 I then set up Norplas.
What were the original aims of Norplas? Tony: The original aim was to introduce the Erema into the British film and recycling industry. For the first 2 years we sold 3 machines each year, then in the third year we sold 14 and then 20 the next year.
What was it like at the beginning? Mary: We started off in a room in our house. We used to have to type all the quotes out on the typewriter, including all the additional copies required. Tony used to ring me up from a service station, since there were no mobiles phones around then. I would then sort out the quote or spares that needed to be sent off. To send faxes over to Erema we had to use a telex (a typewriter with a phone attached, the message would then come out on ticker tape at the other end). And we went through lots of correction fluid!!!
